About Maynard’s Josephus English Translation
Maynard’s Josephus — is actually an 18th-century English translation of Flavius Josephus‘s, a first-century Jewish historian writing around 91 A.D., a Roman-Jewish historian, created by George Henry Maynard. It was released in several editions between 1785 and the early 19th century. One of the most remarkable editions came out in 61 weekly installments from October 22, 1785, to December 23, 1786, and was later put together into a bound volume.
This edition features Maynard‘s “Continuation of the History of the Jews,” which carries the story from the time of Josephus all the way to the present day. It also includes an intriguing “Account of their Dispersion into the various Parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.” Can you believe this work was initially published in London by J. Cooke and then reissued by C. Cooke around 1792? It’s just fascinating!
Historian Reads Josephus Writings About Jesus
Look at this, this is written in 91 A.D., at the same time there appeared in Judea an extraordinary person called Jesus, if it be lawful to call him a man. He was a famous worker of miracles, a teacher of those who were desirous of receiving the truth and simplicity, and brought over to him many disciples, both Jews and Gentiles. This was the Jesus Christ, whom Pilate, as the accusation of the princes of the great men of the nation, delivered up to the ignominious punishment of the cross, notwithstanding which those who first loved him did not forsake him.
Josephus Talks About the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ
He appeared to them alive again the third day after his crucifixion, which numbers other, with numberless other wonders concerning him. Thence to this day there is a set of people who bear the name of Christian as owning him for their head, lord, and master.
Maynard’s Josephus – Historical Documented Witness
This is a historical documented witness that Jesus Christ was real, he was legitimate, and they bear record of this historical narrative. From 91 A.D.? Yes, sir. This is 20 years after the fall of Jerusalem. This man was not a Christian, he was very anti-Christian, he was very pro-Rome and pro-Sanhedrin.
