Arrested for Protesting the Destruction of a German Village
Greta Thunberg was one of the climate activists arrested during a protest against the destruction of a German village to make way for a coalmine. She was taken into custody after sitting near the edge of the massive Garzweiler 2 mine, roughly 5 miles from Lützerath.
When the Protest Started and How it Ended
Greta Thunberg, who joined the activists on Friday at the German village, was spotted sitting by herself in a large police bus after her arrest. Over the weekend, riot police, supported by bulldozers, cleared protesters from buildings in the German village, leaving only a few hiding in trees and an underground tunnel. Yet, protesters, including Greta Thunberg, persisted at the site with a sit-in that lasted until Tuesday and was arrested.
German Aachen Police Spokesperson
An Aachen police spokesperson stated: “Greta Thunberg was part of a group of protesters who rushed toward the ledge. However, she was then stopped and carried by us along with this group out of the immediate danger area to confirm their identities.”
