Massie Explains Prime Act and what it Means for Local Consumers and Local Farmers

I’ve been working on something called the Prime Act to be put in the Farm Bill, which would make it easier for local farmers to sell directly to local consumers using a local slaughterhouse with scale-appropriate regulations. You don’t need the USDA to inspect a facility that has seven employees With the Prime Act. They have seven kids working here.

A lot of these meat processing places that are local have fewer employees than you might have at a restaurant. So what I’ve proposed with the Prime Act is that you could just have the local health inspection. The same people that inspect restaurants or the meat department at Kroger’s could be inspecting these farmers slaughterhouses.

How Rep Massie Prime Act Works

As long as you don’t cross state lines and stay local, you shouldn’t need the federal government’s involvement in this processing. Good news is I got the Prime Act in the Farm Bill. It’s in the base text of the House version of the Farm Bill.

They debated that Farm Bill in committee for like 27 straight hours or something, and my Prime Act amendment made it through the committee, and so we’re going to be voting on that in the House of Representatives here pretty soon.
