He is echoing calls from the victim’s family, despite the San Francisco County coroner ruling the man’s death a suicide in November. The parents of Sushir Balaji say they don’t believe their son committed suicide and they’d like to have an outside agency investigate their son’s death.

They say on November 26, Balaji was discovered dead in his San Francisco apartment from an apparent gunshot wound. San Francisco police say it appeared to be a suicide and there was no evidence of foul play in its initial investigation. Still, his mother says there were things out of place in his apartment. The pen drive is missing. Then his computer was messed up. His desktop was on, left on for three days.
Whistleblower Story of OpenAI Programmer Sushir Balaji
Balaji started working as a programmer researcher for OpenAI in 2020 and after resigning he publicly claimed OpenAI violated copyright laws while developing chat GPT. His parents say he was called to be a witness for a case against OpenAI four days before his death.
Parents Want Independent Investigation of OpenAI
Another avenue that they went through is they start striking agreement with certain news agencies. Romero says they’re conducting an independent autopsy and have received support from Silicon Valley Congressman Ro Khanna.

Now, about a month after Balaji’s death, OpenAI released a statement on X saying, in part, “w”We were devastated to learn of this tragic news and have been in touch with the Shears family to offer our full support during this difficult time. Our priority is to continue to do everything we can to assist them. We first became aware of his concerns when the New York Times published his comments, and we have no record of further interaction with him. We respect his and others’ rights to share views freely.”
